The Goblet of Fire

I saw Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire today. I haven’t read any of the books, and although I KNEW about the Tri-Wizard Tournament before seeing the movie, I was surprised by much of what happened. I teared up when the thing with Cedric.Harry.Voldemort happened, but I think I handled myself pretty well. Then, I came home and read “One Last Ride”, a drabble by
mousapellimousapelli (LJ). I burst into tears. So much for holding it together.
Cedric reluctantly landed his broom when night began falling. He should’ve been studying for NEWTS, or practicing for the Third Task, but Cedric couldn’t resist one last ride across the Quidditch pitch on a brilliant summer’s afternoon.
Leaning on his broom, Cedric savored a final view of the grass and goalposts, remembering the rush of the game, his teammates’ shouting, the roaring crowd. All the things he would miss most after graduation.
“Goodbye, Quidditch Pitch!” he shouted as the twilight swallowed the far hoops, laughing at his own silliness.
After all, he’d be here next fall for Hufflepuff’s first game.
A Greek Rant

Okay, for the record: I wrote this on Wednesday evening right after Greek Council elections but just got a chance to type and post it tonight. Also, this is NOT about Greek people from Greece. Rather, it’s about members of the “Greek system” present on many college campuses,
I love my Kappas. My big sister was a founding member of the chapter here at F&M; the Gammas are the best class in the world; Sigma, Robyn, Jen Whinney, Katie M, and Noel (members of other classes) positively influenced me while I was pledging and since then they’ve remained faithful friends. I don’t know the Deltas and Epsilons very well, but I know they wouldn’t be part of Kappa if the women I love didn’t love them. For all my bitching, I will never abandon my Kappas.
That said, I hate Greeks. I attended the Greek Council elections and had to hold back vomit at the way people were elected. The official-ness of it was fine; everything went smoothly and there were secret ballots and everything. It was orderly and well-handled. Kudos to Doug Fox (the current VP) for that much at least.
But Gods! The people who were elected! >.< I wanted to puke. Here’s what was wrong with Greek Council elections.
1. The fraternity to sorority ratio is almost 2 to 1; there are seven frats but only two sororities.
2. The vote is by majority, not plurality; that means 50% plus one wins the vote for any given position. If you do the math, 5 out of 9 Greek organizations must vote for a single person for that person to be elected to office.
3. The case being as it is, the frats need ZERO sorority votes to have “one of the boys” elected, BUT each sorority needs either FOUR frat votes OR the other sorority vote and THREE frat votes to have a Greek woman elected.
4. There are eight positions up for grabs: president, vice president, treasurer, secretary, social chair, recruitment chair, judicial board chair, and community relations chair. And, yes, that is in order of importance. The Council’s constitution says that there must be (a) no more than two members of one frat or sorority on the board at a time, and (b) an equal representation of women and men on the board at all times. That means four women and four men. That would be fine EXCEPT, for the entire life of the Council (which thus far is a little over two years), part (b) has been waived by a majority vote on the part of the member frats.
5. That means that there have been about two women and six men on the Greek Council for its entire existence. The excuse is “It’s more representative this way” but COME ON. It’s the FRATERNITIES that have shitty average GPAs, not us. It’s the FRATERNITIES that have their houses condemned by the county because they didn’t leave the heat on over winter break, not us. It’s the FRATERNITIES that throw mixers like “Secretaries and CEOs”–like that’s not suggestive?!?
6. Not to mention that the elections themselves were sadly only popularity contests. It was pathetic.
Eck. I’m so sick of Greeks. I am NOT a sorority girl and if ANYONE ever calls me that, they won’t have fingers soon afterward. I just want to…. GAH I don’t even KNOW I’m so mad. Gods, it’s like having an ANCIENT mindset while living in the present. We are NOT objects and we DO have a voice. Just you wait, frat brothers, just you wait.

Why I named my compy “Veronica”

While setting up my compy, Louis was helping me and I asked him what I should name her. We talked for a while, and then I tried to tell him about a funny commercial (which is below) and he didn’t get it, but then I was like, “Okay, that’s my compy’s name: Veronica. That’s precious.”
This is a commercial for Bacardi Rum featuring the Bacardi and Cola guys. “Totally Busted” ad spot is set in a penthouse party. B&C are talking to two fine young ladies when they are approached by a ditzy but gorgeous strawberry blonde with a plunging neckline.
Girl: Hey, Barcardi Guy. Cola.
Cola: Oh, hey…Ahhh??
Girl: Don’t you remember my name?
Bacardi: Sure we do…Anne? Karen?
Cola: Erin? Sarah? Kimberly?
Bacardi: Julie? Mindy? Laticia?
Cola: Pearl? Veronica? Tammy?
Girl: [slow on the uptake] Veronica. Yeah. You *do* remember. You guys look hot!
Bacardi: Yeah.
Singers: “Bacardi & Cola. They get the job done!”

I just had THE worst computer experience EVER.
by V.E. on November 18th, 2005

I wanted to transfer the important files from Alcarinqua to Veronica, right? So here’s how it went. Mind you, I got Veronica and set her up LAST Friday. I just got my files onto her TODAY.
1. I can’t have both compies hooked up the F&M network at the same time cause that’s cheating and stealing or something. SO, I can’t just hook one up and instant message myself all the files on the other one.
2. All is not lost! I have friends with computers, and I’ll just move all the stuff to one of theirs. SO, Louis graciously lends me his Mac and off my files go to his compy. Since neither of us know how to do that in a reasonable amount of time, Pedro helps us.
3. Everything’s great for a while. I get Veronica all booted up and take all the crap off of her (ie: “Get AOL for 6 months FREE!” and a trial edition of WordPerfect) and then download the stuff I actually WANT. Okay, so now I need my files back from IseekYoda, Louis’ computer.
4. Unfortunately for me, Louis has a life and actually uses his compy for stuff, and that means I don’t have access to it for a long time. When I finally DO rope him and IseekYoda in, we discover that sending the files via AIM (since we don’t have Pedro to help us do it the faster way at this point) to Veronica will take TEN HOURS to complete and he has places to be and isn’t willing to let IseekYoda out of his sight, even though I have no roommate and will lock the door and windows and everything. *sigh*
5. Louis says he’ll burn me a DVD of my files and then I’ll have them and everything will be happy and joyful. After some altercations involving his lucky Yoda figurine (don’t ask), I get the DVD. HUZZAH!
6. I futz around for a while and then stick the DVD in. The drive reads the disk, knows how much space is taken up and that I can’t write over what is already on it, BUT it does not see the files themselves. CRAP and more CRAP. I mess around to see if I can get the files to show, but no such luck.
7. I rope in Yager to help me and he brings over his laptop to see what’s up. After putting the DVD into his computer’s drive (his compy has no name *sadness*) and it reads, he informs me that files burned on disks using a Mac (which IseekYoda is) means that PCs (read: Windows XP) won’t recognize them, even if the PC recognizes the disk itself. Great, just great.
8. So we once again try the file transfer through AIM, but Yager has a life too, and he needs his compy for class, so letting it sit in my room transferring for 10 hours is out of the question.
9. Yager suggests I do this transfer thing while I’m a work. SOOO, I create a new screen name–just for this purpose–and set the name’s preference to receive files (namely, MY files) from another compy (the one at work) automatically. OKAY…. so fast forward to while I’m at work.
10. I put the DVD into the only computer at work that has a DVD drive and transfer the files from the disk to the desktop. YAY. It’s finally coming together. BUT, the computers at work didn’t have AIM, so I proceed to download AIM on the compy which I’m using.
11. Turns out, I can’t download anything because I’m not logged into the Admin’s username, SOOO I delete the newly transferred files from the desktop, sign out, sign in to Admin, RE-transfer the files from the disk to the Admin desktop, and download AIM so I can transfer the files to my Mac-hating computer.
12. OKAY, so I sign on and send an IM to Veronica. All’s well thus far. I then try to send the files from the work compy to her (which, remember, I set up to accept transfers automatically). She doesn’t accept. WTF?!?
13. Yager (who works where I work and happened to be at work at the same time) then tells me that it’s possible that AIM won’t automatically accept transfers no matter WHAT it’s set on IF the compy is idle. Veronica is idle. DAMN IT.
14. I go ALL the way back to my room (across campus) to make it UN-idle (thus rendering the automatically accepting thing completely and utterly useless) and FINALLY, all my files transfer.
15. GODS, it was TERRIBLE. And, if you’ve been keeping track, my PC/Mac fiasco included four people (Louis, Pedro, Yager, and myself), two distant locations, and FIVE separate computers (Alcarinqua, Veronica, IseekYoda, Yager’s unnamed compy, and the work computer).
NOW, I just have to make sure I can OPEN the files that were FINALLY transferred to Veronica so I can go on with my life. *falls down dead*

Today in a tidy, numbered list

OKAY! What I did today:
1. finished that English paper that is worth 25% of my grade in one class
2. attended that class and turned in the paper *whew*
3. went to official college van certification
4. drove all around Lancaster to prove that, yes, I CAN drive
–I’m pretty sure I passed the driving part, now I just have to worry about the paperwork
5. got back, went straight to my room, and crashed for FIVE HOURS
–I did an involuntary all-nighter last night, so I was dead tired
6. got up and proceeded to check my email and update LJ
What I have yet to do:
1. read the rest of Colors of Courage
2. read and comment on the poem packet for this week for my poetry class
3. read a terribly loooong atricle called “Realizing Human Rights”
4. read a bunch of excerpts from The Philosophy of Human Rights
BUT, I don’t have any clubs or anything on Mondays (GOD, I love Mondays for that reason), so I don’t have to actually go OUT for the rest of the evening. That said: commence reading! My question to you: can I get all that reading done in 4 hours or less? I want to be in bed dreaming sweet dreams by 1 AM. I’m off!

Obviously, I’ve changed my layout. All titles (etc) are in German, so if you don’t know German, HAHA. No, I’m just kidding. Here’s some translations.
main title: atmen Sie tief = Take a deep breath
subtitle: Tiefes Atmen in meinem Gemüt = Deep breathing in my mind
friends page: lässt langsam es aus = slowly let it out
other German on my pages
in der vergangenheit = in the past
voher = recently, previously
coverschwörer = co-conspirators (friends)
die bibliothek = the library (calendar view)
verbraucherinfo = user info
verbindungen = links
gefühl = emotion (mood)
ertönt = sound (music)
