Update on the lump in my breast

So it’s been a little while since I mentioned the lump in my breast.

I went to the doctor surgeon on Tuesday (missing half of one of my classes) and after looking at my ultrasound x-rays and feeling the lump for himself, he gave me three options. All of which, he said, were viable, considering my age.

The lump is most likely a fibroadenoma, of which MedlinePlus has to say: “Fibroadenomas are non-cancerous lumps that feel rubbery and are easily moveable within the breast tissue. Like fibrocystic changes, they occur most often during the reproductive years. Usually, they are not tender and, except in rare cases, do not become cancerous later. A doctor may feel fairly certain from an exam that a particular lump is a fibroadenoma. The only way to be sure, however, is to remove or biopsy them.” (emphasis added)

SOOO, the three options presented were as follows:
1. leave the lump as is and just monitor it to make sure it doesn’t change.
2. biopsy it to make sure that it actually is a fibroadenoma.
3. have surgery to take it out altogether.

After some discussion (I wanted to just leave it, the doctor was professionally indifferent, and Bennett wanted me to have surgery to take it out completely), I decided to have the surgery and have it taken out completely. The doctor put it this way, “Lumps belong in jars, not patients,” and later he mentioned that he has two daughters, one 17 and one 19, and if they had this problem, he would tell them to go ahead with the surgery so that it wouldn’t worry them later.

My surgery is next Tuesday 8:45-11:45 AM and I will probably be pretty loopy from the anesthesia for the rest of the day. So, if I weird you out that day, at least you’ll know why. The thing I’m worried about is the anesthesia. I HATE being unconscious around people I don’t know and/or trust very little. I came home last Tuesday and cried; not because of the surgery itself, but because I’m going to have to be sedated for this thing to happen. I get REALLY anxious about the whole “I don’t know/remember what’s going on” thing… which is partly the reason I don’t drink. Bennett managed to talk me through it, but I know my anxiety level is just going to go up the nearer the surgery gets.

Blech. We’ll see.

Just so ya’ll know…
