Greeks: “social organizations”

Why are social fraternities and sororities so focused on drinking? I just don’t get it. Greek Council was this evening and all that was discussed was Alumni Weekend and Greek Week… and only in relation to how smashed the alums and current brothers and sisters will be getting that week/end. It’s really NOT cool.

I can see drinking if you’re a fighter pilot or a marine or an army soldier. I mean… you may die tomorrow so you might as well live it up today, right? But affluent college students?? …with nothing else to do but waste money on beer and liquor, get so drunk they can’t walk straight and throw up and urinate all over themselves? (and trust me, I’ve seen all that happen)… and then wake up in the morning complaining of a hangover and wondering WHY they feel so shitty and their grades are so low? Jesus, it makes me sick to my stomach.

What’s even worse is that, since I’m in a Greek organization, people assume I’m a slut who goes out drinking just to get blind-rotten smashed just as much as the girls who give sorority sisters that reputation. Gross. I left the meeting feeling worse than I have in a long time.

‘_’ Don’t feel badly; I know that it’s an organization you’re in and so you have to participate in the meetings and listen to them all talking about getting drunk and stuff. But I for one know that you are NOT like that at all, you are a sensible person who doesn’t waste time and money trashing herself. If anyone assumes bad stuff about you, they will be able to see for themselves that it isn’t true by getting to know you. If some people aren’t willing to give you a chance, you can refer them to me, and I will tell them what’s what about recognizing individuals and not overgeneralizing. ^-^
