Pay-per-Post: Like Soaps?

[If you hadn't guessed from the first part of the title, this is a paid post.]

After looking through Soap Opera News (henceforth: SON), I’ve got one main suggestion. I hope my questions will help you [the administrators of SON] think outside the box and expand your site’s wealth of information.

I’m not much for soaps, but I have seen an episode of Days of Our Lives and General Hospital here and there, so I’m not completely coming out of left field. My first thought is, “What about the history?” Where do soaps come from? Why are they called “soap operas” and not something else? They’re certainly not opera in the “I’m going to see an opera in New York” sense of the word. Were soaps originally something else and then evolved to their current form? As someone who knows nearly nothing about the genre, what can you [the administrators of SON] tell me about the shows and background that will make me want to watch them? What was “the first” soap opera, and how do you decide what “counts” as a soap today? For that matter, who decides?
