I love words; I love their history and pronunciation. I know all about the argument between descriptive and prescriptive types of word directories. I’m the only person I know who’s been excited to get a dictionary for Christmas, and I’m the kind of person who has an entire Amazon.com wishlist just for etymology, cartography, and dictionaries.
I have very specific definitions for certain words, words that directly impact me. I’ll be talking about “Friend” later in this Blogathon, but for now, here are three examples.
Hope via Merriam-Webster: “to desire with expectation of obtainment”
My definition: desiring something beyond realistic expectations.
Acquaintance via M-W: “the state of being acquainted; personal knowledge”
My definition: anyone I’ve met in person who is not specifically designated a friend or enemy.
Love via M-W: “strong affection for another arising out of kinship or personal ties; attraction based on sexual desire”
My definition: madness; a contract with grief, however necessary.
