CANAAN, ep. 2

Parkour/capoeira from someone not Canaan. Really? Say it ain’t so!
CANAAN episode 2 doesn’t really clear anything up for me. That is, I still don’t know what the hell’s going on, the names of any of the characters besides Canaan and Maria, or if I even like the series. I did manage to learn one more character’s name, though, so by the time the series ends, I’ll only have like fifty more to learn.

A photographic negative of the pattern on a man’s neck.
There was a kick-ass opening scene involving the not-secretary blowing cars up and shooting (American?) soldiers, and then it went back to the reporter and photographer, Maria. Maria is apparently the only survivor of the “Ua” virus, a virus which is supposed to have a 100% death rate. (She has amnesia about the whole ordeal, so she’s not much help in really figuring out why she survived when no one else did.) The reporter, looking through his photo negatives, notices a strange pattern on one of the dead guys from ep. 1. (The translation says the pattern is a “bruise”, so that’s what I’ll be going with, but I wouldn’t have called it that just looking at it.)

Yes, Canaan is field stripping her gun as calmly
as any other woman would be putting on earrings or makeup.
The reporter demands to know Maria’s connection to Canaan and she says, “Tamagotchi desu!” which is a girly, cutesy way of saying, “We’re friends!” or “She’s my friend!” You get the idea. She says she taught Canaan how to play cat’s cradle when they first met and that’s how they got to know each other. (Cat’s cradle is apparently a big deal for Canaan, too, since she mentions it later in the episode.)

This is Alphard with her sister (apparently) on the left, who is the not-secretary, and Cummings on the right, the not-CEO. Or whatever. In any case, the one in the middle is the leader.
The reporter and Maria find out that the bruise thing is a big deal, though they don’t know why (and I don’t either, though I’m sure all will be clear in time). Some little kid and an old man with a similar bruise on his forehead start chasing them and they catch a cab with a crazy driver (no joke; he sends them flying off the end of an unfinished bridge) to escape. And then, when that doesn’t work, Canaan’s there to save their asses… again.
Do I see a pattern emerging here?
The crazy old man and Canaan duke it out on top of moving bus and, eventually, he literally jumps into a set of oncoming electrical wires and is… electrocuted. To death. Duh. The kid is… somewhat less than happy.

The old guy and the kid (driving) chasing the reporter and Maria.
Actually, I guess a few things have been cleared up. The not-CEO guy (his name is apparently Cummings) is either a masochist or is just willing to put up with serious pain in dealing with the not-secretary. Seriously. She’s kicked him, bossed him around, humiliated and embarrassed him, and shot him at close range with BBs/pellets. I’m sure it’s only going to get worse. Then again, it’s apparent she’s only doing that because her “Ne-sama” (older sister with an honorary suffix), Alphard, won’t give her the time of day.
(According to the slight cheating I did to figure out some names,) Alphard is the leader of the terrorist cell Hebi, which means “Snake”… which would explain somewhat the connection to Maria. (Maria’s father runs a pharmaceutical company called Hebi and used all his power to save her when she was infected with Ua.)
Oh, and Alphard and Canaan have the same tattoo on their left arms.

Obligatory shower scene.
Also, I still don’t get Canaan’s eye power(s). She did the eye thing again this episode and suddenly she’s… faster? Sees everything in blue? I have no idea.
I really wish I knew Japanese, because I think this whole thing would make more sense, if for no other reason than because I wouldn’t have to watch the subtitles instead of the action.

Sometimes even knowing Japanese doesn’t make some of the movies/anime easier to understand! Lol…
But, yes, half the time when I watch something in Japanese that has been subtitled, I sit there going, ‘That’s not the right translation!’or “I would of used xxx instead of that crap phrase they’ve used”.
I really wish I could get into anime. I feel like I’m just not one of the ‘cool kids’ because I don’t like it. Maybe I just haven’t found the right one for me yet.
