How “plebe” are you?

How "plebe" are you?

So here’s an interesting survey (via, which was via, which was based on this), and I’ve read all the accompanying links (see previous parentheses) and I’m still not sure how to score it to decide if I’m a plebe or not. So… I win? Do I even want to be a plebe? I… don’t know? Whatever. Here are my answers.

How Plebe Are You?

1. Can you talk about “Mad Men?” No.
2. Can you talk about the “The Sopranos?” No.
3. Do you know who replaced Bob Barker on “The Price Is Right?” Uh, no.
4. Have you watched an Oprah show from beginning to end? Yes.
5. Can you hold forth animatedly about yoga? Depends on how much I’m allowed to bullshit.
6. How about pilates? No.
7. How about skiing? Ugh, no. Skiing is for… well, no.
8. Mountain biking? No.
9. Do you know who Jimmie Johnson is? Not a clue.
10. Does the acronym ‘MMA’ mean anything to you? Um… “mixed martial arts”?
11. Can you talk about books endlessly? Most definitely.
12. Have you ever read a “Left Behind” novel? No, but my little brother has.
13. How about a Harlequin romance? Yeah, a couple.
14. Do you take interesting vacations? I mostly “staycation”, irritating as that word is.
15. Do you know a great backpacking spot in the Sierra Nevada? No.
16. What about an exquisite B&B overlooking Boothbay Harbor? …No.
17. Would you be caught dead in an RV? Uh… sure? As long as it gets me there…
18. Would you be caught dead on a cruise ship? I guess, if I could afford it and didn’t have other priorities.
19. Have you ever heard of of Branson, Mo? Nope.
20. Have you ever attended a meeting of a Kiwanis Club? No.
21. How about the Rotary Club? No.
22. Have you lived for at least a year in a small town? Not including college, no.
23. Have you lived for a year in an urban neighborhood in which most of your neighbors did not have college degrees? Yep; Bensonhurst, Brooklyn.
24. Have you spent at least a year with a family income less than twice the poverty line? Yes.
25. Do you have a close friend who is an evangelical Christian? Like my sister? -_- Yes.
26. Have you ever visited a factory floor? Yes.
27. Have you worked on one? No.

Okay, wait, here’s the key. Since these are all yes/no questions, you are 100% plebe if you answer as follows (according to the original article):

1. Can you talk about “Mad Men?” Yes.
2. Can you talk about the “The Sopranos?” Yes.
3. Do you know who replaced Bob Barker on “The Price Is Right?” No.
4. Have you watched an Oprah show from beginning to end? No.
5. Can you hold forth animatedly about yoga? Yes.
6. How about pilates? Yes.
7. How about skiing? Yes.
8. Mountain biking? Yes.
9. Do you know who Jimmie Johnson is? No.
10. Does the acronym ‘MMA’ mean anything to you? No.
11. Can you talk about books endlessly? Yes.
12. Have you ever read a “Left Behind” novel? No.
13. How about a Harlequin romance? No.
14. Do you take interesting vacations? Yes.
15. Do you know a great backpacking spot in the Sierra Nevada? Yes.
16. What about an exquisite B&B overlooking Boothbay Harbor? Yes.
17. Would you be caught dead in an RV? No.
18. Would you be caught dead on a cruise ship? No.
19. Have you ever heard of of Branson, Mo? No.
20. Have you ever attended a meeting of a Kiwanis Club? No.
21. How about the Rotary Club? No.
22. Have you lived for at least a year in a small town? No.
23. Have you lived for a year in an urban neighborhood in which most of your neighbors did not have college degrees? No.
24. Have you spent at least a year with a family income less than twice the poverty line? No.
25. Do you have a close friend who is an evangelical Christian? No.
26. Have you ever visited a factory floor? No.
27. Have you worked on one? No.

If you answer the opposite, then… you’re not a plebe, I guess, and you’re not “isolated and ignorant”. So, with all this ‘new’ information, how well did I score? I answered 10 out of 27 questions ‘correctly’ (so as not to be a plebe, which is apparently a bad thing). So I’m only (roughly) 37% plebe, I guess. (Can someone check my math/tallying? I think I got it all right, but having it double checked would be great, if you have time.)

I gave half points for question #5 (yoga) because: I can talk about it, but I don’t really know a lot about it; and #18 (cruise ship) because: I don’t mind cruise ships, I just don’t care one way or the other. Being “caught dead” on one doesn’t really factor into it for me. It’s more like, “Do I want to do this, and can I afford it?” (The answers are: “Not really but meh, and no.” But it’s not like I’d turn down a free cruise or something. >_>) By the way, my answer to #10 (MMA) was correct. I counted #14 (interesting vacations) as a “no” answer because I doubt the article author would consider my ‘staycations’ very interesting, even though I think they’re just fine.

Ugh, this was boring and not really worth figuring out the ‘correct’ answers. Who the hell cares one way or the other about any of this? That whole article (the original one) is just a bunch of ageist, elitist (gasp!) bullshit.

On an airplane

A white woman, about 51 years old, was seated next to a black man on an airplane. Obviously disturbed by this, she called the air hostess.

“Madam, what is the matter?” the hostess asked.

“You obviously do not see it,” she responded. “You placed me next to a black man. I do not agree to sit next to someone from such a repugnant group. Give me an alternative seat.”

“Be calm please,” the hostess replied. “Almost all the places on this flight are taken. I will go to see if another place is available.”

The Hostess went away and then came back a few minutes later. “Mam, I spoke to the captain and he informed me that there is also no seat in the business class. All the same, we still have one place in the first class.”

Before the woman could say anything, the hostess continued, “It is not usual for our company to permit someone from the economy class to sit in the first class. However, given the circumstances, the captain feels that it would be scandalous to make someone sit next to someone so disgusting.”

The hostess turned to the black man and said “Therefore, Sir, if you would like to, please collect your hand luggage, a seat awaits you in first class.”

At that moment, the other passengers who were shocked by what they had just witnessed stood up and applauded.

I hope this is true.
