V.E. DuncanIf you’re interested in my services, please email me: vduncan[at]fandm[dot]edu

I hold an MFA in Creative Writing from Wilkes University and have more than ten years experience editing academic and creative works. I’d be happy to read over your paper or manuscript. Here’s what I offer.

If you’re considering hiring me as an editor, I will look at (and edit) up to 1000 words for free as a trial run for both of us. You’ll get to see my editing style, and I’ll get to see what kind of editing I can offer you that will best benefit your work. As a writer myself, I know that it’s important to keep the tone and quality of each work consistent with its author.

If we both decide I’d be a good editor for your work, I will charge you based on (the type of editing you’d like me to do for you) x (the length of your work). If you’d like a succinct, overall opinion (2 pages or less) with a few suggestions, my reading fee is $15 per hour.

  1. Proofreading already edited work; $0.006 per word.
  2. Copy editing to fix grammar and punctuation errors, bring out your unique style, and make effective word choices; $0.012 per word.
  3. Line editing to fix errors at the sentence level, rearrange ideas for a smoother flow, and checking paragraphs and/or chapters for internal continuity; $0.015 per word.
  4. Content editing gives suggestions for your work that could change the storyline, characters, or language for your intended audience in order to give the piece a more coherent, internally cohesive flow; $0.018 per word.

I do not fact-check except under very special circumstances. All four types of editing I offer include email correspondence. For an in-person consultation, please email me for a quote.

Your work should be formatted: 12 pt Times New Roman, 1″ margins, double-spaced. Sorry; I will not look at work that isn’t correctly formatted.

I accept Paypal payments, personal checks, and well-concealed cash. Generally speaking, I can return short pieces in a week or less. When you contact me, please let me know about any deadlines you may have so that I can do my best to accommodate you.

I also edit poetry. If you have a collection of poetry that you would like examined by another poet with an educated eye for detail and the big picture, my flat fee is $5.00 per poem (except epic poetry, which I can edit/look over at the rates above). Poetry may be single-spaced; email me if you have any questions.

I love writing reviews; check out my most recent reviews here and here! If you’d like to send me an already-published work to review, please let me know. I would be thrilled to see your work, but unfortunately I can’t promise I’ll give it a positive review. My reviews are honest, and some people might say I’m a tough critic, but don’t let that scare you off. ^_^

I take a particular liking to (well-edited) self-published novels because I know they usually need all the press they can get! If you think you might have something you’d like me to take a crack at, email me and I will let you know where to send your hardcopy. Under certain conditions, I also accept PDFs (ebooks) for review. I do not review works for which I’ve been paid to edit (see above) as it would create a conflict of interest.
